The Belgian government has approved a new law that bans all wild animals from circuses; this makes Belgium the fifth country within the EU to put an end to the keeping of non-domesticated animals in circuses. The animal protection organisation FOUR PAWS welcomes this great success for animal protection and believes it is the duty of the British government to follow the example of their European neighboring countries.
Last week, the Belgian Council of Minsters ratified the respective law, which had been introduced by the minister of animal protection. At this point, the new regulation only has to be approved by the Parliament as over 130 cities and municipals have previously refused the stay of circuses with wild animals. Belgian animal workers see the vote of the government as the culmination of their years of fighting for a ban on wild animals in circuses. With this exemplary decision in the interest of animal protection, the kingdom follows the EU-countries, Bulgaria, Greece, Great Britain, Austria and Slovenia, which have already issued respective regulations. The government of the Netherlands has also announced its plans to implement such a ban.
Angelique Davies, Head of Programmes at FOUR PAWS UK says: “This is extremely positive news as wild animals’ needs can never be met when they are touring with a circus. We hope that the UK Government will learn from this example and ensure that the forthcoming ban on wild animals in circuses covers all species of wild animal and not only big cats and elephants."
